Luck
As my first blog topic I'm going to talk about something I was thinking about in English class last week. So, last week we had a journal entry prompt. The question was "What was one time you did something out of superstition?" So that got me thinking about all of the things that are labeled as being superstitions. Like, walking under a ladder, or spilling a salt shaker, or breaking a mirror, or a black cat walking in front of you. Those are all things that can be said to give you bad luck. Well, then that got me thinking about luck. What does luck really mean? So, I looked it up. The definition of luck is "the force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person's life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities." Ok, so it's a force. Does that mean that it is something mental? I think it's absolutely mental, but some people take bad and good luck very seriously. For example, my mom. She is one of those people that believes in all that stuff. She used to tell me that if I walked under a ladder, or broke a mirror I would get bad luck for 7 years. And I believed it. But, now looking back on it, I really don't know why I believed it. Bad things can happen to people all the time and I feel like saying that it's luck is just an excuse. It's not like you can say "Oh do you remember that time you spilled that salt shaker at olive garden two years ago? I guess that bad luck is coming for you." That doesn't make any sense! Either way, people eat up the idea of luck. For some people, if they would have walked under a ladder, their lives would have been over. Also, what drives people to think of these random things as being bad or good luck? Why can't slapping a seal, or slamming a door be considered bad luck? Why does it have to be walking under a ladder or spilling a salt shaker. I have walked under a ladder several times (some were not intentional), and nothing bad has happened to me yet. But I still got 6 and a half years left.
